Making the transition into senior housing can be difficult for many elderly individuals. They may feel as though they are losing so many things that have been an important part of their lives – their home, their freedom, and maybe even their car. This can make the transition difficult for many no matter how much they need the help that living in senior housing can provide.
Whether your loved one is looking into moving into an assisted living location or a skilled nursing facility that will provide more 24-hour care, you can help your loved one feel better about the move if you let her share her preference and then work on finding a location that will provide what she desires.
While taking into account her medical and physical needs, there are also other preferences you can consider to make her next residence one she is happy to live at. Here are some things to consider when helping your loved one find the senior housing that is right for her.
Location
Does your loved one need to be near family members or her clinic? If being near family members is important for your loved one and your family, look at a senior housing location that is easily reached by everyone who wants to visit.
Your loved one might also have a preference as to whether she lives in the city or the country. She may want to choose a location that has a pond or lake attached so that she can go out and sit by it. Ask your loved one what is important about where she’s moving to and then work on finding a senior housing location that meets those needs as closely as possible.
Activities
Many senior housing environments offer plenty of activities to keep their residents busy and enjoying themselves. Is this something your loved one desires? Not everyone wants a full social schedule so knowing your loved one’s preferences will help you work with her to choose a new home that’ll have exactly what she desires offered. She may not think she wants a lot of social opportunities but many seniors who have been living on their own, don’t realize how isolated they had become until they move into a senior housing location. Once they see all of the people around them and learn about all of the activities, they often find themselves more busy and having more fun than they have in years.
Pets
If your loved one has a beloved pet, finding senior housing that will allow the pet will really help her feel better about the move. Not all senior living environments have the same rules and regulations regarding pets so keep searching until you find one that can not only accommodate your loved one but her pet as well.
It can be tricky to find the perfect place. Consider having a professional senior placement advisor help you find the perfect place for your loved one.
