Senior Housing & Placement – Five Questions to Ask Your Senior Placement Service Before You Hire
Finding the perfect place for your elderly loved one to live is difficult, and sometimes emotional. Different parties involved may have varying opinions about what is important, what is negotiable, and what is an absolute must-have. Trying to do it all on your own, or even with another family member can be overwhelming as you try to navigate waters you’ve never been in before.
You might find yourself looking at having a senior placement service help you sort through the plethora of information that you are bombarded with to help you find the right place for your elderly loved one. A senior placement service or specialist is trained to research and know all of the facets of the senior housing communities in your area. They will work as your advocate and provide you with good, solid information so that you can feel good about the decision you make for your elderly loved one.
But before you begin working with an agency or a senior placement service, you should meet with them first and ask some questions of your own. Here are five questions you should ask before you begin working together.
How well do they know the area?
This is one person you don’t want who has just moved to your area in the last couple of months. Working with a seasoned senior placement service with experts who are well aware of the entire community (not just the senior communities) will give you the ability to talk about travel time to each place and the local neighborhoods that each senior housing community is in among other things.
Have they been to each senior housing community?
You want someone who has been inside each senior housing community already, getting to know the staff and seeing how well the place is run and kept up. Outside appearances can often be much different than inside, so having a senior placement service who has already been inside can save you from booking a tour that won’t meet your expectations.
How do they receive payment?
Senior placement services often partner with assisted living facilities, earning a marketing fee instead of charging families. If they are paid by them, ask about how they remain unbiased when giving tours and offering suggestions.
Ask them if they’ll tour with you.
Some senior placement service tour with you, and some schedule the tours for you. Which do you prefer? If you want someone with whom to ask questions from, make sure that is offered before you agree to partner with them.
Check their reviews.
While this is not a question to ask them, do your background work first and see what others have thought of their services. Check Google reviews, online reviews, and if you know anyone who has used them before, ask for their honest opinion.
A senior placement service can be a great asset to help you through the many steps it takes to find the perfect place for your loved one.
